The Boston Red Sox are on the verge of trading third baseman Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers for 1B/C prospect Max Ramirez. Boston would reportedly absorb $9 of the $12 million remaining on Lowell's 1-year contract to get the deal done. (Man these guys have NO problem spending money on guys playing for someone else).
The driving factor in this deal is to improve the defense that ranked 28 out of 30 in defensive efficiency last season. This potential move would give Boston some flexibility to move Kevin Youkilis to third and obtain a new first baseman or keep the defensively gifted Casey Kotchman at that spot. The most likely scenario would be to sign free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, a player Sox GM Theo Epstein holds in high regard.
